COLLECTION MAP

Explore the world’s rivers through our curated collection of river water samples, made possible by a global network of contributors. Each point on the map indicates a collection site. Click on a marker to learn the name of the contributor associated with that river.

  • The numerical sequence approximately reflects the order in which water from each river were collected, with the Mekong River being the initial one.

  • Black markers represent rivers that have been collected or are planned for collection but have not yet been officially added to the collection.

  • Brown markers indicate waterways that may be considered “rivers” by some but are actually manmade canals or water bodies such as straights, subterranean waterways, etc. While they are not officially part of the collection, they are significant for their impact on human culture.

  • Green markers represent two rivers collected at their confluence point.

  • Grey markers represent rivers collected twice, for example, lower and upper sections or in the case of transboundary rivers, different countries.
