Our Personal Journey: Meeting Jordi Miguel
In the summer of 2022, River Mixer traveled to Manaus to collect the Amazon River and Rio Negro, and to learn more about the region’s river systems. We embarked on Jordi’s popular 5-day exploration of the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the very itinerary we are about to describe. A last-minute cancellation left us with the entire boat to ourselves for a few nights, allowing for one-on-one experiences with Jordi and his crew, a truly unforgettable excursion. The cook even expertly filleted the piranha we caught the day before, for a unique lunch experience. Let us share with you, the unique experience of the Rio Negro, as seen through the eyes of Jordi Miguel.
Jordi Miguel: An Amazon Expert
Since 2002, Jordi has dedicated himself to exploring and understanding the Amazon, with a deep specialization in the aquatic ecosystems of the region. His years of experience have made him an invaluable resource for biologists, photographers, and adventurers alike. His specialization in ichthyology (the study of fish) is key. The Amazon teems with diverse aquatic life, and Jordi’s knowledge allows him to pinpoint and explain the fascinating adaptations of these creatures. He often shares stories of discovering rare fish species or witnessing unique aquatic behaviors. He has tales of the Arapaima (Pirarucu), and many other amazing fish. He knows the best places and times to look for specific species. His vessels “Lo Peix” and “Acqua Amazon” are more than just boats, they are mobile research stations, and gateways to the hidden Amazon world, with a strong emphasis on the Rio Negro’s unique environment. His passion for the river is infectious.

The Rio Negro: A Unique Ecosystem
The Rio Negro’s dark, acidic waters are a result of decaying vegetation, creating a unique environment distinct from the sediment-rich ‘white water’ of the main Amazon. This acidity is a vital factor in the biodiversity of the river. Despite its dark appearance, the Rio Negro is a haven for an incredible variety of life. From colorful cichlids to elusive river dolphins, the ecosystem is teeming with wonders. Unique flora, like the flooded forests (igapós), and fauna, such as monkeys, sloths, and a vast array of birdlife, as well as unique fish, thrive here. The lack of mosquitos due to the water acidity, and the differences in pH, water clarity, and fish types, when comparing the Rio Negro to the main Amazon river, are very important factors to understand. The “Meeting of the Waters” is a spectacular sight, where the dark waters of the Rio Negro and the muddy waters of the Solimões River (the name often given to upper stretches of the Amazon River ) run side by side for miles, due to differences in water chemistry, temperature, and speed. It’s a natural wonder that must be seen to be believed.
